Exploring Shingle and Metal Roofing

When it comes to roofing, both metal and shingle solutions have distinct advantages and disadvantages, making the decision largely reliant on criteria such as climate, budget, and aesthetic preferences. At Peak Performance Roofing & Exteriors, we offer both options and would be happy to explore which might be best for your property.

Here is an overview of what each material brings to the table:

  • Durability and Lifespan: One of the most significant differences between shingle and metal roofing is durability. Metal roofs are noted for their long life, frequently lasting 40+ years with proper care. Additionally, they are extremely resistant to things such as fire, wind, and hail, making them a popular choice for many homeowners in our area. Shingle roofs, primarily built of asphalt, have a lifespan of 15+ years. While their shorter lifespan might cause you to think metal is the way to go, shingles are still quite durable, particularly high-quality asphalt options.
  • Energy Efficiency: Metal roofing frequently outperforms other roof types in terms of energy efficiency. They reflect more sunlight than shingles, which can help keep a building cool in hot weather and potentially save cooling expenses. Additionally, some metal roofs have specific coatings that improve their reflecting qualities. Shingle roofs tend to absorb more heat, which may not be as energy efficient in warmer climates but might be advantageous in our area, where we have several cooler months.
  • Installation and Costs: Shingle roofs are less expensive up front and easier to install, making them a popular option for smaller budgets. Metal roofing, on the other hand, has a greater initial cost for both materials and labour. Also, installation is more sophisticated. However, the investment can pay off in the long run by reducing the need for repairs and replacements.
